My name is Agata Kopydłowska, and I work in abstract painting and graphic art. My interests also include realistic drawing and photography.
My choice of medium is closely tied to my current emotional state. For many years, I created art using only black fineliners and pens, and the very idea of working with color put me off. However, under the influence of strong emotions, I discovered that this was not enough for me. That’s when I turned to acrylic paints and canvases—suddenly, colors and all the expression associated with them came into my work. Then I discovered the beauty and ethereality of watercolors. It is the combination of water, pigment, and the blending of shades in such a unique way that watercolors offer that fulfills my current needs. Perhaps this is related to my growing confidence in showing my sensitivity, rather than hiding behind a mask of toughness. Another element of the process is applying dotted forms and lines using ink and nibs or fineliners.
By using a variety of media, I achieve a multidimensional quality in my work: interpenetration and contrast—delicacy and transience set against bold ink splashes. The choice of paper is also significant—it adds an extra layer of texture to the final piece.
My creative process is characterized by intuition, attention to detail, and also spontaneity, as I do not control the entire process. I follow my intuition and desire to explore; I experiment. At the same time, during the many hours spent working on details, I achieve a sense of calm. Creating helps me find inner peace; it acts like meditation—purifying and soothing—facilitating the processing of emotions and helping me cope with mental and physical pain.
From black and white, through the exploration of color, to the use of modern duochrome metallic paints, applying various dotted forms, focusing on drawing lines, my works emerge gradually, honoring the process of creation. The journey over the destination. The process over the result.
For me, the creative process is the only constant and a moment of calm. Through art and by sharing my experiences, I would like to show that it is possible and worthwhile to seek respite and peace in life, even when everything around us is unstable.
